dMk Builders - Our History

dMk Builder’s Sole Proprietor, Dave Preedom, started with a long history of family builders. Dave’s Grandfather, John Preedom, was a cabinet maker from Ludlow VT where he designed and built custom cabinetry for many homes and chalets on Okemo Mt. John and his wife owned several acres on Preedom hill in Ludlow where they raised thirteen children. As each child married they were gifted land on Preedom hill where many of them built their first home. One of Dave’s Uncles, Francis J. Preedom, started building homes in the Ludlow area, and his 2 sons worked with him for many years, developing a very successful business. Dave’s father, Merle Preedom, is a retiree from General Electric. However, his father’s passion for building and remodeling could not be satisfied by his factory job so he freelanced small remodeling/repair jobs. Dave, the youngest of six children, was born in Rutland VT. As he grew older he would spend many hours working beside his dad learning the remodeling and repair trade. His parents owned a seven bedroom home in Rutland. This is where Dave remembers, as a very young child, holding the end of numerous of 2 x 4’s while his dad cut them to length as they remodeled a room a year in that large home.

Through his high school years, and after graduation, Dave worked with various small business contractors in the Rutland area. He then went to work for General Electric, and like his Dad, freelanced small remodeling jobs. In 1992 Dave was laid off from General Electric. Because he also had a passion to design and build things he went to Vermont Technical College and earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Upon graduation IBM hired him as an Engineer Technician. Dave had the best of both worlds he worked a three day work week at IBM which enabled him to freelance larger construction projects. Dave was with IBM for six years, and then once again he went through another lay off.

Dave vividly remembers driving home that last day from IBM praying that if God wants him in construction then he would trust Him to provide the work. During that drive he received two calls on his cell phone. One individual needed an addition built; the other needed a new kitchen installed.

Dave was convinced and now determined to unleash his inherited ability to build with his hands, using the skills provided by his heritage and God, to not only build homes, but to build a business. Dave didn’t struggle long with picking a name for his business. What he had learned was passed down to him by many generations, and his personal desire is to pass his skills down to his boys, that made dMk Builders the obvious choice d, representing Dave, M for Matthew his first son, and k for Kenneth his second son. He states that the case size of the lettering dMk is only for design and appearance only, but Matthew jokingly claims to hold the most shares in the business.

It is Dave’s goal to not only teach his sons, now fifteen and fourteen, the building trade but to teach them that dMk Builders has been built on a foundation of respect, integrity, and heritage. This business has been trusted to God, and to be certain that the focus does not change; you will see on the company truck’s license plate DMK4HIM as well as his e-mail address dmk4him@verizon.net.

It is the desire of Dave Preedom that when you hire dMk Builders your not just hiring a builder with a degree in Engineering, but rather your hiring a business that is respectful, courteous, and privileged to be allowed to meet your needs, whether large or small every project is important to them.
